Thermoforming

THERMOFORMING EXPLAINED

What is thermoforming? This is simply the method of applying heat to a material so that it is more pliable and can be moulded into a specific shape. Allstar Plastics specializes in several forms of thermoforming:

Dome blowing –

We have enhanced our technique over years of experience and modified machinery to create a seamless process. Our equipment is used in conjunction with heat from large ovens to blow softened material into a uniform dome without the marks of a mould. This creates an optically clear product which can be reproduced multiple times up to the size of 1800mm. These domes can be used for machine covers, skylights, shopfitting displays and more.

Plastic welding –

Welding technique is used when the materials required cannot be joined using glue such as HDPE and polypropylene. Our fabricators use an extrusion welding tool which creates a stream of heated material applied to a join. This creates a strong bond perfect for tanks and water liners.

Bending and forming –

A rig or mould is created and then heat is applied to a plastic sheet to form it to a specific bend or curve. Bent panels can be used for anything from pool fencing, awnings to security screens and POS displays.

Fabricated letters –

Using our tried and tested method of heating plastic strips in conjunction with a specialized glue technique, our fabricators create custom signs which can be a variety of fonts, colours and sizes. These letter sets can be illuminated for extra effect. We work directly with signwriters to achieve the ideal concept.

Other kinds of thermoforming – We work only with sheet material and cannot assist with the following:

Vacuum forming – Material is heated then a vacuum is used to stretch over a mould which creates precise shapes. Commonly used for packaging like clamshell containers or interior automotive components.

Injection moulding – Plastic pellets are heated, and a high-pressure pump injects the material into a mould which is left to cool and solidify. Commonly used for bottle caps, syringes and electronic components.

Extrusion – Plastic pellets are heated and pushed through a machine with a nozzle then is cooled as is passes through the machine die. Used for creating tubes, trims and frames.
